Seats that still work after three hours
A seat that feels good in a showroom has told you almost nothing. The failure happens somewhere around Winburg on the way north, and it is usually a seat base 40 mm too short.

Why we measure the seat base
We put the tape along the cushion from the back of the squab to the front edge and write the number down. Under about 480 mm, a driver of average height carries the weight of the lower leg on the thigh muscles instead of the cushion, and three hours later the ache is in the hamstring rather than the back. Over about 530 mm with no thigh extension, a shorter driver cannot bend the knee properly and ends up perching.
The second number is cushion angle, measured with a small spirit level against the front edge. Around four to six degrees nose-up holds the pelvis; flat lets you slide forward over a long run, and anything steeper starts pressing behind the knee. These are not opinions and they take ninety seconds to check in a dealership, which is why we publish both figures for every car on the hub.
Lumbar support and the long slouch
Four-way lumbar is worth real money over two-way. Two-way moves the bolster in and out at one fixed height, which helps if your lumbar curve happens to sit there. Four-way moves it up and down as well, and on three of the cars we measured the useful range was 85 mm of vertical travel. For a driver with an old lower-back injury that range is the difference between a car that works and a car that does not.
Memory seats matter less than people think and powered adjustment matters more, for an unexpected reason. A manual rake lever adjusted in notches of three degrees cannot find the setting between two notches, and the setting you want is almost always between two notches.
Getting in and getting out
The measurement that no brochure carries is door aperture height at the B-pillar, taken from the sill to the top of the opening. We have recorded anything from 1 090 mm in a low coupe-roofed crossover to 1 320 mm in a plain high-roofed people carrier. If you have a replaced hip, that number and the sill height off the tar decide the car, and nothing else comes close in importance.
Seat H-point height is the companion figure. Between about 580 and 660 mm off the road surface, most adults can slide across rather than climb up or drop down. Below 500 mm you lower yourself in; above 720 mm you step up, and in a Bloemfontein winter with frost on the running board, stepping up is how people fall.
The rear bench and the third adult
Rear knee room measured from the back of the front seat to the front of the rear cushion, with the front seat set for a driver of 1.78 m, is the honest version of legroom. We also measure rear cushion height off the floor, because a bench that sits 240 mm up leaves an adult with their knees above their hips and no thigh support at all. Several large family cars with generous knee room fail badly on this.
Then the middle seat. Shoulder room across the bench at elbow height tells you whether three adults can sit there for the two hours to Kroonstad, and the answer is usually no unless that figure is above about 1 430 mm. A flat floor helps more than width does.
What we mark a seat down for
Hard side bolsters that a wider driver sits on rather than between. Headrests fixed at an angle that pushes the head forward, which on a long drive produces a neck ache the driver blames on the road. Perforated leather with no ventilation, which in a car parked on Zastron Street in high summer is simply hot leather with holes in it.
And one more: the seat heater without a seat cooler. On the plains you want both. Frost mornings here sit at minus five or minus six and the afternoon of the same day can touch 33 °C, so a car sold with heated seats and no ventilation has been specified for the wrong country.
Three things to take away
- 01Seat base length under 480 mm is the most common reason a comfortable car becomes uncomfortable after two hours.
- 02Door aperture height and sill height decide the car for anyone with a hip or knee replacement.
- 03Heated seats without ventilated seats are a northern-hemisphere specification sold here unchanged.
